Joining us for a Q&A is the handsome Houston Rhines, star of eCupid which will be screened at Outfest in Los Angeles on July 11th at the Director's Guild of America. Showtime is @ 9:30pm, but get there early for good seats.
Check out what Houston has to say about life, love, and making a movie!
Hunk du Jour: How did you hear about eCupid and how did you end up getting involved in the project?
Houston Rhines: The director, JC Calciano tells the story about how he was so impressed with me at an audition for his earlier film "IS IT JUST ME?" that he kept my video on file for the future. If that's the case, I'm flattered. He called me and asked me to audition, he sent me the script and I loved the message within the film. So I agreed to be in it, plus he promised he would let me keep a sexy pair of teal underwear I have to wear in pool scene at the end of the movie.
HDJ: How would you describe your character in three sentences?
Houston: Marshall is the kind of guy who questions his current situation, like we all do sometimes do (I think), and wonders if the relationship he is currently in is right for him.
Houston: He's cocky about his job yet not rude to people about it because, he just wants to be able to shine but can't - he's in the classic dead end job.
Houston: He's also described in the movie as an "A-list gay" - heck, who the hell am I to argue with that?
HDJ: Are there any parallels between the movie and real life for you?
Houston: For one, Marshall looks a lot like Houston Rhines. I also am the kind of guy that questions everything around me..is this right? Is this how it should be? Things like that.
HDJ: Have you ever used online dating sites or smartphone apps to meet new people?
Houston: I use my twitter to connect with people. I'm a tweet freak. What's my handle you ask? @houstonrhines
HDJ: What would eCupid say you need to look for in a partner?
Houston: Someone who has the quirky sense of humor that I have as well as someone who can handle my craziness. Sometimes I need to be told to slow down.
HDJ: What do you actually look for in a partner?
Houston: Someone rich and hot!! Or better yet, exactly what I described above, great sense of humor and someone who I can talk to.
HDJ: Who would you recommend this film to?
Houston: Everyone and their mom. Then tell their mom to bring a date.
Houston: I honestly think this is a story everyone can relate to, straight or gay. It's a story about people and love. It's universal in its message, so I recommend it to everyone who wants to see a great movie.
HDJ: Any fun stories from set?
Houston: When shooting a passionate scene, the actors don't really kiss until the scene starts. In my scene with Galen (the sexy frat boy) he started kissing me in all the rehearsals. I told him "slow down cowboy" but he kept going for it, which I though was strange, but I though he has a special acting method that I didn't know about or just really liked me. I found months later during a film festival Hawaii that JC the director told him be aggressive during rehearsals and that it wasn't because he liked me. I must admit, I was a bit disappointed to learn that.
HDJ: What was your favorite / least favorite costume piece?
Houston: My favorite was the teal underwear. They were even nice enough to let me keep them and take them home.
Houston: My least favorite is the hideous black pair of underwear they wanted me to wear before we decided on teal. I wouldn't wear them they were just too small. JC probably has them on now.
HDJ: What was your favorite part of the film to shoot?
Houston: I loved working with Morgan Fairchild and who wouldn't?! You can learn a lot just from watching her do her thing and she had amazing classic Hollywood stories that she would share with us.
HDJ: What are a few interesting things we may not know about you?
Houston: Big Sports fans...all the Cleveland teams are my favorite
Houston: Was an All-Conference basketball player in h.s.
Houston: Im a little bit of a comic book nerd
Houston: I have an older and younger brother, both live in Ohio
Houston: I am great at RapStar for my XBox. Bring it!
Houston: I know every word to songs I like but have no idea who singings them.
Houston: At night, I'm Batman
HDJ: What is next for you -- any upcoming projects we should watch out for?
Houston: I'm working on a lot of projects now, I'm just not at liberty to discuss them, Mr. Spielberg asked me to keep quiet for now on the secret project we are working on together. However, I am concentrating building my fan base on my facebook and twitter so i encourage everyone to learn more about eCUPID and my other projects by becoming a friend of the movie at eCUPIDthemovie and following me on twitter @houstonrhines
