Name: Joseph Corella
Vitals: 26, 5'6", 140 lbs.
Residence: New York City
This is actually Joseph's second HDJ appearance. His first was last Friday, when he was one of the Friday TPiR guys (and based on the poll numbers, a fan favorite)! We talk to him about his acting career, his connection with the Pussycat Dolls, and what he plans to do with a dinette set.
You're in the touring cast of Grease right now?
Yep -- I am the Hand Jive Speciality and also understudy to Sonny & Eugene.
We'll get to your career in just a moment, but first -- while you were on tour, you were on TPiR and won a dinette set! How did you and your castmates end up there?
One of the guys in the cast had the idea. He got everyone together that wanted to go and went. As you saw, we also had shirts made that said "Drew - you're the one that we want". And I can't believe I won a dinette set -- also -- fine china and a sound system! The whole thing was really surreal.
I'm very jealous that you got to spin the wheel and all.
That wheel is heavy!
What are you going to do with china and a dinette set?
I am keeping the china, but I am giving the dinette set to my boyfriend's parents to hold on to.
Back to Grease -- is this your first road tour?
This is my first national tour.
What's it like being far from home for long stretches at a time?
It can be very hard at times being away, but you learn to really try and explore each city that you're in. Right now, we are in San Francisco and I am loving it.
What's a typical day like for y'all?
A typical day for me would be getting up and having some breakfast. Then, I usually try to head to the gym. I also like to get some reading in if I can too. Some weeks, we also have understudy rehearsal, so our days are very full.
It also depends on the city as well. Some cities, there are a lot of things to do and some cities are pretty boring
Then, of course, there's the actual performance, right? I'm sure that takes more than just the 2 hours the audience sees on stage.
We do have the show at 8pm on the weekdays and I usually like to get there at 7pm. I am usually out of the theatre by like 10:30. We usually have a 5 show weekend -- which is 1 show Friday, 2 shows Saturday, and 2 show Sunday.
Then it's off to bed to do it all again the next day.
Yep! I usually don't stay up late after the show.
What other shows have you done?
I was in a Broadway show called All Shook Up... also, Altar Boyz, West Side Story, Guys & Dolls, and other fun stuff.
What's been your favorite role so far in your career?
All Shook Up was one of the most favorite and memorable experiences. It was my Broadway debut. I replaced someone in the show and when I got it, I had only 7 days to learn the show. It was all very exciting and nerve racking.
What's on Joseph's iPod right now?
I have to admit I was listening to Britney Spears Circus album this morning. I also have the usual Katy Perry, Pussycat Dolls, Kelly Clarkson, Pink, Plumb, and sooooo much more.
Britney was just here (Kansas City, home of HDJ's Midwest office) last week. With the Pussycat Dolls opening!
I love it! I have a friend on tour with (Britney) right now -- and I know one of the girls in the Pussycat Dolls. She is from Arizona as well, and I won't forget when I took her to my senior prom.
When you were on TPiR, you gave a "Hi Jonathan" shout-out -- I'm guessing that's your boyfriend? How long have you guys been together?
Yep! We have been together for 2 1/2 years now.
With you on the road, do you guys get to see each other very often?
We see each other when we can. He is in a show in NYC so both of our lives are very busy. We really try to see each other at least every 4 weeks.
What would be your dream role?
It's funny, 'cause I don't really have a dream role in mind. But, I know I would like someone to create a role specifically for me.
Lastly... did you REALLY know how much Hot Pockets cost? And when was the last time you had a Hot Pocket, anyway?
It can be really hard to play those games when you're so excited! I did pay really close attention and once I understood the game I knew the Hot Pockets were the one. I didn't even really pay attention to the other products when they were explaining them. I don't think I have had a Hot Pocket since high school!
