This movie is absolutely wonderful! Unlike other American-made gay movies, this movie DOES NOT offer the following: Drug use and glorification, drag queens, HIV/AIDS infected, superficial, promiscuous, effeminate limp-wristed guys, with a cynical view on life.

No, "Shelter" stands out on its own wonderful merits and it is a fantastic movie. Rarely, and not since "Broken Hearts Club" has a gay film been more beautifully done. Most anything since "BHC," "Latter Days" and "Brokeback Mountain" can be considered garbage and not worth seeing! But "Shelter" is a gem of a movie!! Watch it!

I have not seen the fil but have seen a lot of trailers for the movie and I am dyine to see it. As for some one to say that brokeback mountain was not as worthy of a tale of a gay man is totally prejudice to say. You may not get something from a movie that may be totally helpful to someone in our community. So before you a film down that may not reflect your life or what you view as empowering in our community think of those who watch the movies you put down and get clarity in a world that does not accept gay people as a whole. This movie is beautifully done as well as the other movies. The other movies may not have been geared towards you but may have been very helpful to others. Let's not criticize but embrace all. If anyone would love to further this discussion email me joshhoughton@hotmail.com Enjoy watching Shelter as well as all the gay themed movies as you will never know what you will learn about people or yourself. Thanks.

Read closely Joshua: I rank "Brokeback Mountain" as one of the FINER American-made films made during the time when other gay films have failed miserably in presentation, story, acting, and direction. I did see "Brokeback" and proudly own this film in my collection of movies.

But I will not tolerate, nor "embrace", most other lurid gay films which present gay people in a bad, stereotypical, unoriginal light. If you want to relate to stereotype, or live it up like those I describe in my prior posting, then that's who you are. But I most certainly won't sit back, wasting my time during such garbage with a belief that I'm suppose to "relate" to those insipid characters of those other films. I have seen many of those other films, and believe I have wasted my time. So don't go assuming that I "... will never know ..." what I will learn about people or myself. I know what I've seen and what I'm writing about.

Very interesting conversation here. I love it because both of you are right in respective ways. I am glad Brad cleared that up for Josh who must have misread that comment regarding Brokeback. I at first thought Josh what are you talking about. I thought who said Brokeback was horrible and thought you must have meant it came from another post. And yes, sadly there are those who did not like Brokeback for which I do not understand, meaning within our community.
I do believe everyone is entitled to their opinions and some will favor other films as opposed to cinema which exploits, if I may, stereotypes. Though I find certain elements of fun in Priscialla and Too Wong Foo, etc., Brad is right about the images that obviously he can not relate too. Thus, I guess I appreciate the balance offered from all these films. And Brokeback is my fav. Yet where would I be without the eye candy of Marco Drapper in Sloppy Seconds. So, I enjoy both.
I do want to say, let us all be glad we finally live in a time in which all these films can be made. I am 50 and remember when no gay character was on tv, yet they were in reality gay, but closeted; think Paul Lynde on Hollywood Squares. Thankfully Ellen DeGeneres came out and opened the doors and now we are everywhere. Hats off to her.
Though I, as does Brad, do not relate to some of the films I mentioned, I still enjoy them. I don't think we are being asked to subscribe to those styles of living. But we can not deny that those people depicted are in our community and are fully appreciated whether limp wristed or hitting a baseball like Dean Cain in BHC. Let us work toward accepting all. Does not mean you have to like all. Big difference in acceptance and liking, as in whom you choose to keep your company. But let us band together as there are enough against us.
Ready for more Marco? I am.
Peace. Brandon
